Laboratory Technician - Biology

Who we are?
The University Hospital Zurich (USZ) is one of the top hospitals in Switzerland that provides fundamental medical care and cutting-edge research in a central location in Zurich. As an important part of USZ, the division of Endocrinology, diabetology and clinical nutrition (ENK) uses superior academic knowledge to treat a wide range of endocrine and metabolism related issues. Out research team within ENK focuses on the pathophysiology of endocrine hypertension, a disease caused by aberrant production of mineralocorticoid aldosterone. We use cellular and in vivo models to investigate the mechanisms that contribute to the aberrant regulation of hormone secretion and mediate the effects on the cardiovascular system. We are now recruiting a laboratory technician who will be working on a SNF funded project.

What is your responsibility?
  • Independent implementation of biological experiments such as cell culture, Western blot, PCR, qRT-PCR, ELISA, histology, immunostaining and microscopy
  • Basic data analysis and documentation of procedures and results
  • Operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities
  • Participation in the management of laboratory inventory
  • Contribute to the evaluation of new lab equipment
  • Actively participate in team meeting and lab seminar
  • Report to postdoc and lab head

What do you bring?
  • Laboratory technician biology, preferably with 1-3 years of practical experience
  • Practical experience in the basic methods of biology and histology
  • Good knowledge in the MS Office suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Basic In vivo techniques would be an asset
  • Good communication skills in English, German skill is a plus
  • Detail-oriented and can-do attitude

What do we offer?
  • A young and dynamic research team with open-minded environment
  • Access to good trainings offered by the university of Zurich

Master Thesis Project: “Cancer Genomics of Adrenocortical Carcinoma”

Research in our group aims at developing tumor models (in vitro and in vivo), and establishing new therapeutic approaches in endocrine tumors. Our research group has been successful in developing a novel patient-derived tumor model (MUC-1), that has the potential to improve clinical prediction for ACC. As part of this project, we would now like to analyze the whole genome sequencing profiles of two adrenocortical carcinoma cell lines. These tumor models display varied molecular, biochemical and mutational signatures that closely mimics the clinical situation. Co-supervised by an experienced postdoc in the lab you will apply various bioinformatics tools and pipelines to characterize the mutations that drive cancer progression, gene amplifications, SNPs, and identify potential causative variants.
